most CEOs never climb past the first rung
I'm going to say something that might sting:
If you're still optimizing for Google, you're optimizing for a dying channel.
Last month I talked to a CEO doing $2M ARR.
Solid product. Great team.
Zero presence in ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity.
When his ideal customers asked ChatGPT "who's the best vendor for [his category]" — he didn't exist.
His competitors? Listed by name. Cited. Compared. Recommended.
That's the new search.
And most CEOs are sleeping on it.
Here's the thing nobody tells you:
When a buyer asks ChatGPT to recommend a solution, they're not browsing. They're deciding.
Google gave you 10 blue links to fight over.
ChatGPT gives you one shot to be the answer.
But "being the answer" isn't one thing.
It's a ladder.
So I built a 4-layer framework I call The AI Visibility Ladder.
Easiest at the bottom. Hardest at the top.
Climb in order.

Layer 1 — Existence (Easiest)
Ask ChatGPT: "What is [your company]?"
If it doesn't know you, nothing else matters.
This is table stakes. A clean website, a Wikipedia-grade about page, a few real mentions from sources the model trusts.
90% of CEOs fail here and don't realize it.
Layer 2 — Comparison
Ask it: "Compare [your company] vs [your top competitor]."
Now you exist. But do you stand out?
If ChatGPT lists you as "also an option" while painting your competitor as the obvious choice — you have a positioning problem, not a visibility problem.
This is where most agencies plateau.
Layer 3 — Citation
Ask it: "What's the best way to [do the thing you do]?"
Watch which sources it cites.
Now you're not just a brand. You're a source.
Your blog, your podcast, your founder quotes — showing up as the evidence behind the answer.
This is where authority compounds.
Layer 4 — Direct Referral (Hardest)
Ask it: "I have [the problem you solve]. Who should I hire?"
If your name comes out of ChatGPT's mouth — unprompted, unqualified, as the answer — you've won.
This is the top of the ladder.
This is where deals close before the demo.
Almost nobody is here yet.
Which means right now there's a window.
The companies climbing this ladder in 2026 will own their categories by 2028.
The ones still chasing Google rankings will be wondering where their pipeline went.
Run the 4 prompts today.
See which rung you're on.
Then climb.
Let's win together,
Dez

P.S. Rung 1 is fixable in 30 days. Rung 4 takes 12 months of compounded work. Start now or start later — but the gap only widens.
