[3 min read] Learnings after booking over 10,000 appointments

Business is a lot like American football.

Everybody wants the trick play.

The crazy formation. The unexpected pass. The play nobody has seen before.

And sure, sometimes a trick play wins you a game.

But you can’t build a winning season on trick plays.

Eventually, you have to block, tackle, and run the football.

Business works the same way.

You don’t need some secret strategy to build a successful business.

You need to execute the fundamentals consistently.

The Fundamentals of Business

At the simplest level, business comes down to three things:

  1. Marketing

  2. Sales

  3. Fulfillment

That’s it.

You get someone’s attention.

You turn that attention into interest.

You understand what they want.

You make them an offer.

You close the deal.

You deliver what you promised.

Money gets exchanged.

Then you do it again.

The Business Checklist

Here’s the actual homework assignment:

  • Hook — Get someone’s attention.

  • Pitch — Explain the problem, opportunity, or value.

  • CTA — Give them a clear next step.

  • Confirm Interest — Get them into a conversation.

  • Discover — Understand why they’re interested, their pain points, and what they want.

  • Offer — Present the solution.

  • Close — Ask them to buy.

  • Follow Up — Continue the conversation when necessary.

  • Fulfill — Deliver the product or service you sold.

  • Collect — Complete the exchange of money.

Payment terms can change.

Half now and half later.

Net 30.

Due on delivery.

Due when certain milestones are completed.

Those are mechanics.

The fundamental process doesn’t change.

Attention → Interest → Conversation → Offer → Sale → Fulfillment → Money

Your Business Is Your Boss

Imagine your teacher gives you a homework assignment.

They tell you exactly what needs to be completed.

Instead of doing the assignment, you spend five hours researching something completely unrelated.

Maybe the research was interesting.

Maybe you learned something.

Maybe you even felt productive.

But you still didn’t do your homework.

You’re going to fail the assignment.

Business owners do this constantly.

They research.

They redesign things.

They experiment with new software.

They chase the newest strategy.

They build things nobody has asked for.

They consume more information.

Meanwhile, the actual assignment is sitting unfinished.

Market. Sell. Fulfill.

If you worked for somebody and your boss gave you an important task, you couldn’t spend the entire day working on unrelated things and expect to keep your job.

When you own a business, the business becomes your boss.

And your business has given you an assignment.

Do the Boring Work

This is where entrepreneurship becomes difficult.

The fundamentals aren’t always exciting.

Following up isn’t exciting.

Making another sales call isn’t exciting.

Creating another piece of marketing isn’t exciting.

Improving fulfillment isn’t exciting.

Doing the same thing for the 100th time isn’t exciting.

But neither is blocking.

Neither is tackling.

Neither is running the football straight up the middle.

Winning teams do them anyway.

The hardest part of business isn’t knowing what to do.

It’s continuing to do what works when you’re bored of doing it.

Stop Looking for Trick Plays

AI changes.

Platforms change.

Marketing channels change.

Software changes.

Tactics change.

But the fundamentals underneath them remain remarkably simple.

Get attention.

Create interest.

Have conversations.

Make offers.

Close customers.

Deliver results.

Get paid.

Repeat.

So whenever you feel overwhelmed by everything you could be doing in your business, ask yourself:

Am I doing my homework, or am I looking for another trick play?

Because you might win one game with a trick play.

But if you want to win the season?

Block. Tackle. Run the ball.

Do the fundamentals.
